“Meemee” sent in some information on a Filipino American production of The Vagina Monologues. Thanks Meemee!

A couple years ago, I had the opportunity to watch my auntie perform in the Tagalog/ English version of The Vagina Monologues, produced by the dynamic women of the Filipina Women’s Network located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Not only did I get to watch my own flesh and blood take to the stage, but it was also incredibly validating for me, as a Filipina American woman who doesn’t get to see her kind in the spotlight, see others who look like myself give a Filipina voice to Eve Ensler’s powerfully written prose, interspersed with the oratorical mastery of Evelie Posch, a singer/songwriter and Babaylan priestess. I’m not sure if the performance will be the same year, but it wouldn’t hurt to check it out and see how Filipinas rock the vagina puki-style!

WHAT: Filipina women come together in solidarity to dialogue about violence, ways on how to break the Filipino community’s silence and the shame, and how to break the cycle of domestic violence against Filipina women and girls through performances of Eve Ensler’s Obie award-winning The Vagina Monologues and Usaping Puki (Tagalog version).

WHY: To increase awareness about the high incidence of violence in Filipino homes and relationships through popular culture and education. To help Filipina women in abusive relationships take action and seek help.

WHY THIS CAMPAIGN MATTERS: Violence against Filipina women has culturally specific manifestations. Engaging the community through theatre and hearing the women’s stories in Tagalog “hits home” helping us understand the broader connections of Filipino values such as respect for women, dignity, equality and justice to social and economic issues, to class and religion.

WHO: All-Filipina cast are community leaders, actors, students, professionals, activists, and homemakers.
