Up-and-coming Asian American Internet radio station Yellow Powered Radio has changed its name to Boston Progressive Radio to rid itself of the baggage surrounding the word “yellow” and the potentially exclusive implications it could have within the Asian American community. From the website:

The moniker Yellow Powered Radio (YPR) has served us well for the first two months of the existence of this online space. After having a number of discussions with various independent Asian American musicians and allies within the Asian American community, we have decided that a name change is in order. The original intention of the name was to pay homage to the “Yellow Power Movement” that started in the 1960s. However, the term “yellow” is generally a negative one. For one thing, the term has been used in a derogatory manner to describe Asians Americans. Moreover, the term may be interpreted to exclude Asian-Americans who do not have “yellow” skin.

Make no mistake – this name change will not affect the quality of their programming. Tune in 24/7 for the best in dead air – that is, until they get something going. We at Ninja Pants are eagerly awaiting the station’s debut!
